The Alter Elbtunnel in Hamburg St. Pauli
A piece of Hamburg history below the Elbe
Almost 24 meters under the Elbe – the old tunnel beneath the Elbe connects St. Pauli with Steinwerder from the Landesbrücken bridges. For more than 100 years, people and vehicles have been transported here, driven by a huge machinery. In 1911, the Elbtunnel, 426.5 meters long, was considered a technical sensation, being the first river tunnel on the continent. It is not for nothing that it was placed under a preservation order and continues to inspire visitors and film-makers with its unique engineering art. After a walk under the Elbe, you can enjoy the perfect view of the Hamburg skyline, the Michel and the Rickmer Rickmers in Steinwerder.
By the way, if you are planning a special event, the Elbtunnel can be rented.
